{"id":9228,"date":"2017-09-05T15:32:49","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T21:32:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.717madisonplace.com\/?p=9228"},"modified":"2017-09-05T21:19:10","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T03:19:10","slug":"a-legal-eagles-legal-eagle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.717madisonplace.com\/?p=9228","title":{"rendered":"A Legal Eagle&#8217;s Legal Eagle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"330\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KJXzkUH72cY?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back in 1984, the New York Times ran an article on William Bryson, now a senior judge of the Federal Circuit. \u00a0At the time, Judge Bryson was\u00a0<span>special counsel to the chief of the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section in the Department of Justice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I thought his comments about eating at \u00a0Burger King prior to oral argument in New York were interesting [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1984\/12\/13\/us\/working-profile-william-c-bryson-of-the-justice-dept-a-legal-eagle-s-legal-eagle.html?mcubz=0\">Link<\/a>]:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For the oral argument, Mr. Bryson flies in the night before and studies in his hotel room &#8221;either till I&#8217;m prepared, or I think it&#8217;s hopeless.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Having It His Way<\/p>\n<p>On every visit to each city where he handles cases, he has developed a ritual of having dinner and breakfast in the same undistinguished places. &#8221;In New York, I go for dinner to a particular Burger King on Third Avenue,&#8221; he said. &#8221;Burger King is perfect for my anxiety level. Otherwise, I&#8217;d be wasting good food on a churning stomach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He is &#8221;crushed&#8221; if his regular place in any given city is closed when he arrives. &#8221;I fear for the argument if that happens,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The typical oral argument may last 20 to 30 minutes. &#8221;That&#8217;s not a lot of time for the anxiety I&#8217;ve described,&#8221; he conceded, &#8221;but you can make a lot of mistakes in 10 minutes, which I&#8217;ve proved to be true.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If Judge Bryson makes the trip with the Federal Circuit for oral arguments in New York in October, I wonder if he&#8217;ll keep up the Burger King tradition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in 1984, the New York Times ran an article on William Bryson, now a senior judge of the Federal Circuit. \u00a0At the time, Judge Bryson was\u00a0special counsel to the chief of the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section in the Department of Justice.
